How billable hours are calculated

Billable amount = hours worked × hourly rate. The catch is the hours: studies of freelancers consistently find 10–20% of billable income is lost to untracked work — the quick call, the revision round, the afternoon nobody logged. Calculating is the easy half; capturing is where the money leaks.

Decimal vs clock format

This calculator accepts both: 1.75 and 1:45 are the same hour and three-quarters. Invoices usually show decimal hours; timesheets often use h:mm.

Common rounding rules

Many professionals bill in 6-minute (0.1h) or 15-minute (0.25h) increments, always rounding up to the next increment per task. Whatever rule you use, state it on the invoice and apply it consistently.

FAQ

Is this calculator really free?

Yes. No account, no upload — the math runs in your browser and your lines are saved only on this device.

How do I bill different rates for one client?

Add one line per rate — e.g., "Acme — design" at $95 and "Acme — meetings" at $60. The total combines them.

What about tax?

This tool shows pre-tax totals. Timeabit's built-in invoicing can apply your tax rate and payment terms automatically.
